Iran says Saudi Arabia and Houthis have not answered its mediation offer
Iran's foreign minister says Tehran has received no reply from Riyadh or the Houthis to its offer to broker talks, as Egypt delays a parliamentary vote on possible military action.
Iran has received no response from Saudi Arabia or Yemen’s Houthis to its offer to help broker talks to end the fighting between them, Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said in a television interview aired on Tuesday.
Araqchi offered to facilitate dialogue after the Iran-aligned Houthis intensified strikes on Saudi Arabia earlier this month. Speaking to Iraq’s Al Ekhbariya TV, he also addressed the possibility of Egypt joining Saudi Arabia in the war against the Houthis.
“Any foreign intervention would complicate matters,” he said, adding that Cairo had previously told Tehran it would “not directly” intervene in the Yemeni conflict.
Egypt has said it is ready to give Saudi Arabia the support it needs to defend its security, a stance that could raise the stakes in the region. A vote in the Egyptian parliament on a possible military move against the Houthis by the country’s armed forces — among the largest in the Arab world — has been delayed until 26 October.
The interview was reported from Cairo on 20 October by Reuters correspondents Menna Alaa El-Din and Yasmine Ghania, with editing by Sanjeev Miglani.
