Iran's Guards say they seized a US Remus 600 underwater drone in the Strait of Hormuz

Iran's Revolutionary Guards said on Sunday they had seized a US Remus 600 underwater drone in the Strait of Hormuz, accusing it of espionage — their second such capture claim this month.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy said on Sunday that it had seized an American submarine drone in the Strait of Hormuz, identifying the vehicle as a Remus 600 autonomous underwater vehicle it accused of conducting espionage.

“Through a coordinated, complex operation involving intelligence oversight and electronic warfare, IRGC naval forces’ personnel successfully captured an advanced unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) belonging to the terrorist US military,” the naval forces said in a statement carried by state TV, according to Arab News. The statement added that the drone was “operating in the Strait of Hormuz for espionage purposes” and was “now in the hands of the force’s specialists for data recovery”.

State-run broadcaster IRIB quoted the IRGC Navy declaring the Strait of Hormuz “closed” and warning of “decisive and unceasing action against dangerous manoeuvres and unauthorised transit within the strait”.

It is the second such capture claimed this month: earlier in September the IRGC said it had seized a Dive-LD unmanned underwater vehicle — built by US defence technology company Anduril — near the entrance of the strait. Tehran has blockaded the Hormuz waterway since the conflict broke out in late February, while Washington has imposed a counter-blockade of Iranian ports.

Separately on Sunday, Iran’s army spokesperson Mohammad Akraminia said the US could launch a renewed attack on Iran and that the armed forces were ready for confrontation and would “inflict greater damage” on the US, the Jerusalem Post reported citing state media. The United States had not publicly responded to the seizure claim at the time of publication.
