Isaias prompts first hurricane and storm surge watches on northern Gulf Coast

Tropical Storm Isaias is expected to become a hurricane by Thursday and could reach the northern Gulf Coast as a strong Category 2 storm on Friday, prompting the National Hurricane Center to issue its first round of watches for the region.

With the 10 a.m. CDT advisory on Wednesday, a storm surge watch was posted from the mouth of the Mississippi River east to Yankeetown, Florida; a hurricane watch runs from Bay St. Louis, Mississippi to Indian Pass, Florida; and tropical storm watches cover stretches west and east of those zones, from the Jefferson/Plaquemines Parish line in Louisiana to west of Bay St. Louis, and from east of Indian Pass to the Aucilla River in Florida, the NHC said. The watches span more than 450 miles of coastline, with Gulfport, Mobile and Pensacola in the storm’s potential path, USA Today reported.

As of the 11 a.m. advisory, Isaias was centred about 540 miles south-southwest of the mouth of the Mississippi River with maximum sustained winds near 45 mph, moving east-northeast at 8 mph. Forecasters expect rapid strengthening to around 110 mph within 48 hours before a turn to the north, with landfall most likely late Friday or around 1 a.m. Saturday between coastal Mississippi and the western Florida Panhandle.

Rainfall of 3 to 6 inches, with localised totals up to 10 inches, is expected from Friday through the weekend from far south-eastern Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle, raising flash and urban flooding risks, the NHC said.

On Tuesday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency in 25 North Florida counties, from Escambia to Baker, expanding emergency powers and staging sandbags, generators, fuel and flood barriers in Tallahassee and the Santa Rosa area.
