Israeli strike on Gaza City apartment kills at least five

An Israeli airstrike hit a residential apartment in Gaza City's Remal neighbourhood early on Saturday without prior warning, killing at least five people and severely wounding at least six, medical staff at al-Shifa Hospital said.

An Israeli airstrike on a residential apartment in Gaza City early on Saturday killed at least five people, Al Jazeera reported. Reuters, citing Gaza health officials, reported at least four killed.

The strike hit an apartment in the al-Asala building in the Remal neighbourhood of western Gaza City without prior warning, Al Jazeera reported, citing its correspondent Hani al-Shaer reporting from Khan Younis. Medical staff at al-Shifa Hospital said at least five people were killed and at least six were severely wounded. Reuters put the death toll at four. There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military.

The dead included four women, among them an elderly Christian woman and her daughter, Al Jazeera reported. Haaretz reported that Palestinian outlets said a child — reportedly a little girl — was among the dead.

Al Jazeera said three strikes hit in the middle of the night, penetrating the targeted apartment and tearing through the floors below. Fires burned for at least an hour before Palestinian Civil Defence crews put them out, and rescue teams were still searching for missing people and bodies.

The attack comes amid continuing violence since the US-brokered ceasefire of October 2025. Gaza health officials say at least 1,400 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire since the truce, while Israel says Hamas is rearming — a claim Hamas denies — and that four of its soldiers have been killed by militants in Gaza over the same period. Negotiators have stalled on the questions of Hamas disarmament and Israeli withdrawal.
