Bomb threat email puts Jalandhar on alert ahead of Amit Shah rally
A bomb threat email sent to Jalandhar schools on Wednesday targeted Union Home Minister Amit Shah's rally, temples, courts and buses; police are tracing its origin as security was stepped up across the city.
Jalandhar, Punjab — Security agencies were put on high alert on Wednesday after a bomb threat email targeted Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s rally and several locations across the city, hours before he was due to arrive.
The email, sent at around 7.07 am from an unidentified Gmail account, was addressed to several private schools — including MGN, Urban Estate Phase-2 and Cambridge Innovative School in Jalandhar — and similar threats reportedly reached schools in Amritsar. It claimed improvised explosive devices had been planted beneath the rally stage at Paragpur, threatened blasts at schools, Shri Devi Talab temple, the court complex and a government office at specified times, and claimed bombs in two or three of the 2,000 buses ferrying supporters.
The email carried pro-Khalistan language and referenced the “Khalistan National Army” and “Babbar Khalsa (Parmar-Canada)” alongside several names — but their authenticity could not be established. The claims were not independently verified, no explosives were confirmed as recovered, and PTI noted that similar recent threat emails in Punjab and Haryana turned out to be hoaxes.
A police officer said the email was being technically analysed to trace its origin, while security was stepped up at the rally site and the Devi Talab temple complex.
Shah is due to address a major BJP rally at Paragpur closing the party’s 13-day ‘Nasha Mukt Punjab’ anti-drug campaign — launched on September 18, covering 4,000 km across all 117 Punjab assembly constituencies — after visiting Shri Devi Talab temple at around 12.30 pm.
