J&K Assembly passes resolution demanding full statehood restoration amid BJP walkout

The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Monday passed a resolution demanding the urgent restoration of full statehood to the Union Territory, amid a walkout by BJP legislators.

The resolution, moved by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in the House on Friday, calls on the Government of India for the “immediate and urgent restoration of full statehood” to Jammu and Kashmir and asks that the resolution be forwarded to the Union Government. It refers to Assembly resolutions of June 26, 2000 and November 6, 2024.

Proceedings turned stormy as BJP MLAs raised “Bharat Mata ki Jai” slogans, entered the well of the House and demanded Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather step down. The BJP said 23 legislators had signed a motion against the Speaker and demanded it be taken up before other business; Rather said he had not seen the motion and cited rules requiring at least 14 days’ notice.

Ten amendments were moved to the resolution, eight of them — including by National Conference legislators — seeking to broaden it to demand restoration of the special status Jammu and Kashmir held under Articles 370 and 35A before August 5, 2019. The BJP separately moved a motion to remove the Speaker for allowing the resolution.
