Red Line BRT bridge collapse kills guard in Karachi

An under-construction bridge structure of Karachi’s Red Line bus rapid transit project collapsed near Baitul Mukarram Mosque in the Gulshan-e-Iqbal area on Thursday, killing a duty guard who was trapped beneath the debris, rescue officials said.

According to Rescue 1122, the man was performing duty at the construction site when the structure came down. Rescue teams recovered his body from beneath the rubble and completed the operation; officials said no one else was trapped and no further casualties were reported. The guard’s identity had not yet been established. His body was shifted to Jinnah Hospital for medico-legal formalities, ARY News reported, citing rescue officials.

Police initially received reports of a building collapse, but the incident was later clarified as a failure of part of the under-construction Red Line BRT bridge, according to Daily Pakistan.

Rescue authorities did not immediately say what caused the collapse; the cause was being determined, Daily Pakistan reported.

The incident adds to the scrutiny of the Red Line project, launched in 2022 with a 30-month completion target and originally due by June 2024. The Frontier Works Organisation resumed work on the troubled Lot 2 stretch along University Road in April after authorities terminated the previous contractor’s contract over delays, Geo News reported.
