Jammu and Kashmir assembly passes resolution demanding urgent restoration of full statehood

The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly passed a resolution on Monday calling on the Government of India for the immediate and urgent restoration of full statehood, by voice vote after BJP members walked out.

The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Monday passed a resolution calling on the Government of India for the “immediate and urgent restoration of full statehood” to Jammu and Kashmir, amid a walkout by opposition BJP members.

Moved by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday, it invokes the House’s resolutions of 26 June 2000 and 6 November 2024, calls for full statehood, and resolves the resolution be forwarded to the Government of India.

Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather put it to a voice vote. It passed with none voting against, as BJP members — protesting since the start — walked out when it was put to vote. Four MLAs were marshalled out earlier during the ruckus.

At issue were those references: the 2000 resolution sought restoration of greater autonomy as before August 1953, and the 2024 one sought restoration of special status. Amendments seeking explicit references to Articles 370 and 35A were withdrawn after discussion.

“Everybody has read the resolution, please tell me where we are seeking votes from them on autonomy, Articles 370, 35A and special status. We are seeking votes on statehood,” Abdullah said, as the BJP insisted it supports restoring statehood but opposes linking the demand with the region’s former special status.

The resolution is non-binding: a formal demand to the Union government, with any restoration requiring action at the Centre. Abdullah said the Centre had promised statehood before Parliament and the Supreme Court, which in December 2023 directed it be restored at the earliest after elections.
