The armed bystander who intervened in the deadly school shooting in Bend, Oregon has been identified as Kaylub Giamanco, a 36-year-old carpenter and father of two pupils at Silver Rail Elementary School, his brother Kyle Giamanco told NBC News on Friday.
Giamanco was driving home from his lunch break on Thursday when he heard gunfire and saw the gunman entering the school, his brother said. Holding a concealed-weapon permit, he ran inside and shot dead the 16-year-old gunman, ending an attack that killed three children and a teacher and left two others in critical condition.
A family statement on Friday said: “Lifelong Bend resident Kaylub Giamanco has come forward as the man who shot and killed the suspect who entered the school. He is not seeking recognition, but instead wishes to express his gratitude to the first responders, school personnel, and community.”
Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz confirmed a community member stopped the attacker before officers entered the building. Police have not publicly named Giamanco themselves, saying they are withholding the names of everyone involved. Officers arrived within three minutes of the attack beginning, police said.
President Donald Trump described Giamanco as “a great hero” who “took care of business”.
A GoFundMe organised by family friend Amy Reynolds to support Giamanco and his family had raised more than $41,000 by Friday afternoon.
