At least 84 Kenyans involved in the Russia-Ukraine war have been killed or remain missing in action, Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi told Parliament’s Delegated Legislation Committee on 8 October (https://www.the-star.co.ke/news/2026-10-08-musalia-84-kenyans-killed-or-missing-in-russia-war).

Mudavadi said the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs has records of 354 Kenyan nationals involved in the conflict, based on information from diplomatic missions and affected families (https://www.the-star.co.ke/news/2026-10-08-musalia-84-kenyans-killed-or-missing-in-russia-war).

The records show 77 Kenyans are currently on the frontlines, 38 are in camps, 52 are at an unknown location or unclassified, and 34 are hospitalised (https://capitalfm.africa/77-kenyans-on-russia-ukraine-frontlines-as-84-killed-or-missing-govt-says/). Another 62 have been repatriated, five are prisoners of war in Ukraine, one is in detention and one has completed their military contract (https://www.standardmedia.co.ke/amp/national/article/2001559706/revealed-84-kenyans-killed-52-missing-missing-in-russia-ukraine-war).

The figures came in response to a parliamentary petition on the recruitment of Kenyans into the Russian military and the detention of Kenyans in Ukrainian prisons (https://www.the-star.co.ke/news/2026-10-08-musalia-84-kenyans-killed-or-missing-in-russia-war).

Russia has stopped enlisting additional Kenyans after Kenya secured placement on Russia’s military recruitment “stop list” during Mudavadi’s March visit to Moscow, with the Kenyan Embassy in Moscow confirming that no additional nationals have been enlisted since (https://www.standardmedia.co.ke/amp/national/article/2001559706/revealed-84-kenyans-killed-52-missing-missing-in-russia-ukraine-war).

Ukraine reported holding the remains of four Kenyans, and Kenya’s honorary consul visited the Zakhid 1 prisoner-of-war camp, where detainees were reported to be held in humane conditions with access to medical services (https://capitalfm.africa/77-kenyans-on-russia-ukraine-frontlines-as-84-killed-or-missing-govt-says/).
