Russian jet-drones strike Kyiv's National Academy of Sciences; fresh ballistic attack early Tuesday
A Russian drone struck Ukraine's National Academy of Sciences in central Kyiv as jet-powered drones pounded the capital; hours later a fresh ballistic missile attack hit the city early on Tuesday.
At least one person was killed when a Russian drone struck Ukraine’s National Academy of Sciences in central Kyiv on Monday, as Russia pounded the centre of the capital, Reuters reported.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said 19 people had been injured, six of whom were being treated in hospital. Flames leaped from the historic Academy building, where rubble was strewn across the courtyard, and firefighters searched the wreckage for people.
Russia has in recent weeks begun hitting Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities with faster, high-flying jet drones. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Saturday that Ukraine could intercept only just over half of them — far fewer than with the older propeller-powered versions.
A pharmaceutical company, petrol stations and a medical facility were also hit in Kyiv on Monday, while in other cities and regions, civilian facilities, businesses and communications infrastructure were targeted, Zelenskiy said. In Dnipro, a drone attack on a business centre killed three; another person was killed in a logistics office in Synelnykove, regional governor Oleksandr Hanzha said.
Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha accused Russia of cynicism for targeting a scientific institution in the middle of the working day.
Hours later, Russia launched a fresh ballistic missile attack on Kyiv early on Tuesday. Ukraine’s Air Force warned of ballistic missiles heading towards the city from around 1:20 a.m. local time, as air defences activated and explosions rang out across Kyiv, the Kyiv Post reported. Klitschko said late on Monday that two people had been killed and 26 others injured in the capital, including three children; eight of the wounded were hospitalised and one remained in serious condition.
