Lahore police register case after 20-year-old Azerbaijani woman alleges gang rape in Defence

Lahore police have registered a case and identified suspects after a 20-year-old Azerbaijani woman alleged she was drugged and gang-raped by three men in the city's Defence area; she was left near Ghazi Interchange and the suspects' names have been placed on the stop list.

Police in Lahore have registered a case into the alleged gang rape of a 20-year-old Azerbaijani woman in the city’s Defence area, with the suspects identified and a vehicle allegedly used to abduct her recovered from the house of the prime suspect’s relative.

The woman, identified as Diana, told police she was taken to a cafe by two unidentified women after arriving in the city. According to police, the two women had three male friends at the cafe, where the foreign woman was allegedly given a drug-laced substance before being sexually assaulted at a flat.

The incident reportedly took place on the night between Friday and Saturday. The suspects allegedly later left her near the airport — Arab News’s account of her police complaint says near Ghazi Interchange — and fled. Her two mobile phones were taken, according to the first information report, and she called police helpline 15 using a phone borrowed from a passerby. The woman, who had arrived in Pakistan around two weeks earlier for business purposes, had been staying in the Raiwind area.

DIG Investigation Lahore Syed Zeeshan Raza said the suspects had been identified and special teams, headed by SP Investigation Cantt Asim Iftikhar, had been formed to arrest them. “We have identified all the accused. The vehicle used in the crime has been taken into custody,” Raza said, adding that raids were continuing and all available resources were being deployed.

Police said the vehicle was recovered from the house of the main suspect’s relative, who had also fled. The suspects’ names have been placed on the stop list to prevent them leaving the country. The woman has undergone a medical examination but is currently unable to give a statement; police said it will be recorded once she is able to provide it.

The case has been registered at Defence C police station under sections 375A and 337J of Pakistan’s Penal Code. It is the second such case involving foreign women in Punjab in three months: in July, two foreign women — one Dutch, one Venezuelan — were rescued by police in Lahore’s Defence neighbourhood after they were allegedly abducted and sexually assaulted by four men.
