Most-wanted LeT terrorist killed in Budgam encounter, officials say

Security forces killed a most-wanted Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist in an encounter in Budgam district; officials identified him as Sulaiman Shah alias Musa.

Security forces killed a most-wanted Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist in an encounter in the higher reaches of Budgam district in central Kashmir on Tuesday, officials said.

The Army’s Chinar Corps said it launched a joint search operation with the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the CRPF in the general area of Korag, Yousmarg, based on specific intelligence about the presence of terrorists. “Vigilant troops observed suspicious activity, and upon being challenged, the terrorists opened fire, prompting a fierce exchange of gunfire during which one terrorist was neutralised,” the Corps said.

Officials said the man was killed in the remote forest area of Dudhpathri, and that searches continued in the surrounding area afterwards. Officials identified the slain terrorist as Sulaiman Shah alias ‘Musa’; the Army did not disclose his identity in its initial statement. A later Corps post quoted by other outlets identified the recovered body as Mohammad Asif alias Hashim Moosa, and the naming of the slain man varied across reports.

Musa was wanted for involvement in several attacks on both sides of the Pir Panjal range over the past several years and had escaped an encounter in the Yousmarg hills earlier this month. His close associate Yasir was killed in that operation on 5 September. Officials described the killing of Musa as the biggest setback for the LeT in Jammu and Kashmir.
