Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye agreed on Monday to move immediately towards implementing their collective defence commitments and deploying agreed military forces and capabilities in Saudi Arabia, as Houthi attacks on the kingdom continue.

The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of the Strategic-Political and Defence Committee of the Makkah Alliance for Defence in Riyadh, according to a joint statement issued by Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The committee decided to take the necessary measures to provide the agreed military forces and capabilities and ensure their rapid deployment in Saudi Arabia, in accordance with approved arrangements and the national legislation of the three countries. The statement said the move would enhance “readiness, military integration, and the collective capacity to confront and counter threats”.

Pakistan was represented by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir. Turkiye sent Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Defence Minister Yasar Guler and Chief of General Staff General Selcuk Bayraktaroglu, alongside Saudi officials.

The three countries condemned the attempted targeting of Makkah and Madinah and continuing attacks on Saudi cities and civilian and economic facilities. The meeting came a day after Yemen’s Saudi-backed government launched a major offensive against the Iran-backed Houthis. Dar said last week that Saudi Arabia had faced 17 to 18 attacks and that Pakistan was “bound to defend Saudi Arabia”.

The Makkah Joint Defence Agreement, signed on August 7, stipulates that an armed attack on any one of the three countries will be regarded as an attack on all of them.
