A man has been found dead in floodwaters on Queensland’s Fraser Coast after four days of heavy rain left rivers and roads flooded across the state’s south and east, police said.

Police and emergency services were called to Smothering Creek at Boompa Road in Boompa shortly after 11am local time on Monday after reports that a man had been found unresponsive, Queensland Police said. Crews declared the man dead on arrival.

Police said investigations into the circumstances of the man’s death are continuing and that a report will be prepared for the Coroner. The man’s age and identity were not released.

The death came at the end of a four-day deluge that began on Thursday, with torrential downpours flooding rivers and roads and closing roads across Queensland, AAP reports. Six campers were rescued on Monday morning after becoming stranded by floodwaters at a public campground in Leyburn in the Southern Downs, with no injuries reported, police said.

The highest four-day rainfall totals included 439.4mm at Blackdown Tableland near Rockhampton, 325.2mm at Lower Springbrook near the Gold Coast and 314.2mm at Nambour near the Sunshine Coast, AAP reports. Flash flooding hit Laidley Creek and Glenore Grove in the Lockyer Valley west of Brisbane on Monday, closing roads, and warnings of further rain and flooding remained in place.
