A Michigan nurse has been charged with helping a Mexican national escape ICE custody at her hospital, court documents unsealed on Tuesday showed.
Chloe Renae Freeman, 33, of Whitmore Lake, Michigan, was charged in late August with “willfully” helping an unnamed immigrant subject to removal from the US escape federal custody at Trinity Health Ann Arbor Hospital, FBI Special Agent Michael Wagner said in a criminal complaint.
The unnamed Mexican citizen injured himself while fleeing ICE agents on 28 May and was hospitalised for evaluation and a CT scan, the complaint said.
After the scan, Freeman removed the man from the scan room, according to the complaint. Footage showed him leaving the hospital through ambulance bay doors less than three minutes later. He has not been located since.
Freeman admitted during a 18 June interview that she let him leave, Wagner said. Though she knew he was an ICE detainee, she did not believe he was in custody as agents were not with him in the CT room. She said she did not agree with ICE separating people from families, knew she “was going to set him free” and believed he could have died from his injuries.
Trinity Health said Freeman no longer works for the hospital. She was due in a Detroit federal court on Tuesday; her lawyer, Matthew Borgula, told the Detroit News she planned to plead not guilty. The Department of Homeland Security and Freeman’s lawyer did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment.
