Milei brands UN 'useless' over Falklands inaction in fiery UNGA speech

Argentina’s President Javier Milei has attacked the United Nations as a “useless organisation” serving “only to feed a caste of fatally arrogant parasites disguised as well-intentioned bureaucrats”, using his third UN General Assembly address on Wednesday to press Buenos Aires’ sovereignty claim over the Falkland Islands.

Milei accused the UN of “looking the other way” on what he called Argentina’s “national cause”, saying the Malvinas showed the distance “between the words of international institutions and the reality they seek to address”. He called on the UK to “restart negotiations” for a peaceful solution.

The president singled out the Sea Lion oil project, which he said was moving towards extraction on Argentina’s continental shelf under British licences Buenos Aires deems “illegal and illegitimate”. His government has issued formal warnings, legal measures and sanctions against companies involved in the disputed waters and sent a sovereignty defence bill to Congress, which he described as a “peaceful, practical and effective defence”.

Milei further claimed the principle of self-determination “does not apply”, arguing the population “was implanted by the occupying power”. Polls show islanders overwhelmingly support remaining British, and the UK says it will not discuss sovereignty without their consent. Argentina and Britain fought a war over the islands in 1982.
