Ed Miliband meets Iran's foreign minister as Tehran gives US ultimatum on Strait of Hormuz
Ed Miliband has met Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi for the first time, as senior Iranian officials say Washington has four to five days to respond to Tehran's conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband has met his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, for the first time, in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, The Guardian reported on 24 September.
The previously undisclosed apparent deadline was specified by Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, according to the report.
The meeting comes as senior Iranian officials say Washington has four to five days to respond to Iran’s conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, The Guardian reported.
Those conditions, conveyed to US special envoy Steve Witkoff, include the immediate lifting of the naval blockade, the immediate release of frozen Iranian assets, and an end of war across all “resistance” fronts, Reuters reported on 22 September. A three-hour US–Iran meeting took place in New York on Tuesday.
This story is distinct from that earlier diplomatic round: the new developments are Miliband’s first meeting with Araghchi and the four-to-five-day deadline now attached to the conditions.
