Ukraine launches 'biggest ever' drone attack on Moscow as Russia holds final day of elections
Moscow's mayor says 450 drones heading for the Russian capital were destroyed overnight in what he called the largest drone attack yet on the city, with two people killed and the Moscow Oil Refinery hit.
Ukraine launched what Moscow’s mayor called the biggest drone attack yet on the Russian capital overnight, striking on the final day of Russia’s three-day parliamentary election.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on Telegram that “the biggest attack by enemy drones has been repelled,” adding that since Saturday more than 1,600 drones had been shot down “across all fronts”, with 450 of them approaching Moscow. Russia’s defence ministry put the total at 1,110 Ukrainian drones destroyed across Russia, occupied Crimea and the Black Sea.
Moscow region Governor Andrei Vorobyov said two people were killed and 20 injured in the wider region — a 74-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman. The Moscow Oil Refinery was struck, with Reuters witnesses reporting blasts and plumes of smoke at the site, and a residential building was also damaged.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed Kyiv had used a combination of drones and domestically produced missiles, including the Flamingo and Pelican, to strike Russian oil and logistics facilities, saying the revenue they generate helps run Russia’s war machine.
Sobyanin said the “unprecedented attack” was planned to disrupt the elections, adding: “The enemy did not succeed.”
