Himlung avalanche toll rises to 15 as rescuers recover eight more bodies in Nepal
Rescuers recovered eight more bodies on Thursday from the Himlung base camp avalanche, bringing the death toll to 15, with one worker still missing and the search likely to wind up.
The death toll from the avalanche that swept the Himlung base camp in Nepal has risen to 15, after rescuers recovered eight more bodies on Thursday, Reuters and Al Jazeera report.
The avalanche buried the base camp of the 7,126-metre Himlung peak in the northern Manang district, near the Chinese border, early on Sunday. The Nepali workers were pitching tents and fixing ropes for later expeditions. Foreign climbers had not reached the site at the time of the avalanche.
Tul Singh Gurung, president of the Nepal National Mountain Guide Association, told Reuters that 15 bodies have now been recovered, with one worker still missing. “The bodies that were recovered today are expected to be brought by a helicopter to Kathmandu,” he said, adding that chances of finding the missing worker were slim and the rescue operation is likely to wind up.
The eight recovered on Thursday join two mountain guides recovered on Sunday, two kitchen staff pulled out on Monday, and three more bodies found on Tuesday.
Reuters described the disaster as the deadliest incident of the autumn climbing season.
