Nigerian military helicopter carrying 32 crashes in Ondo State

A Nigerian military helicopter with 25 passengers and seven crew on board crashed near the Naval Base in Igbokoda, Ondo State, on Monday morning; the wreckage has been located and search and rescue is under way.

A Nigerian military helicopter carrying 32 people crashed in Ondo State on Monday morning, the aviation minister has said, with search and rescue operations under way and no word yet on casualties.

Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, said in a statement on Monday that the aircraft, with tail number NGR 931, disappeared from radar at about 9:13am while en route from Benin to Lagos after air traffic controllers lost contact with it.

“I regret to inform the general public that Air Traffic Controllers have informed me of the disappearance of a military aircraft with tail number NGR 931, en route to Lagos from Benin at 0913 hours earlier today. All efforts to raise the aircraft on radio proved abortive,” Keyamo said.

The aircraft was subsequently confirmed to have crashed close to the Naval Base in Igbokoda, Ondo State, in southwestern Nigeria. The wreckage has been located and search and rescue operations are ongoing.

Preliminary information indicates that 25 passengers and seven crew members were on board, the minister said. The Nigerian Air Force confirmed ownership of the aircraft, saying it was on a routine mission from Benin to Lagos.

Keyamo said he had spoken to the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, and pledged the ministry’s full cooperation and assistance in the search and rescue effort. He added that further details would be released as they became available.
