10,000 moved to relief centres as deep depression lashes Odisha
Around 10,000 people in southern and western Odisha were shifted to 200 relief centres as a deep depression dumped heavy rain and river levels crossed danger marks.
A deep depression lashed Odisha with heavy rain on Friday 25 September 2026, forcing around 10,000 people in low-lying and landslide-prone areas of southern and western Odisha into 200 relief centres, PTI reported.
At least 24 places recorded more than 100mm of rainfall. Tentulikhunti in Nabarangpur district was the wettest at 395mm, followed by Nandahandi with 344mm and Boriguma in Koraput with 307.8mm, in the 24 hours to 8.30am Friday, PTI said.
Six districts of southern Odisha were severely hit. Schools were closed as rivers swelled, landslides occurred, waterlogging spread and houses were damaged, according to PTI. The water levels of the Jalaka and Budhabalanga rivers in Balasore and the Baitarani and Kani rivers in Jajpur crossed danger marks, threatening another bout of flood, PTI reported.
An official said 33 Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force rescue teams and more than 300 Fire Service teams were clearing road blockades caused by uprooted trees and landslides. The state has already suffered two rounds of floods since the monsoon began, PTI reported.
The India Meteorological Department said the deep depression had weakened into a depression, centred over south interior Odisha adjoining Chhattisgarh.
