Pakistan forces kill Afghan Taliban fighters in Gulistan border retaliation

Pakistan's security forces foiled an attempted Afghan Taliban attack in the Gulistan sector on Thursday, killing several fighters in retaliatory action, with intermittent firing continuing along the Balochistan border.

Pakistan’s security forces foiled an attempted attack by Afghan Taliban fighters in the Gulistan sector along the Pak-Afghan border on Thursday, killing several Taliban personnel in a retaliatory operation, security sources said.

The sources said the forces responded promptly to the attempted aggression, inflicting casualties on the Afghan Taliban. Intermittent firing between Pakistani security forces and Afghan Taliban fighters was continuing, the sources said, adding that Pakistan’s security forces remain fully alert and vigilant along the border.

Dawn separately reported the retaliatory action along the Balochistan border on Thursday evening, citing sources who said several Afghan Taliban fighters were killed.

The exchange came hours after Pakistan conducted precision aerial and drone strikes on 10 locations in Afghanistan, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said, following the downing of eight drones that had entered Pakistani airspace from Afghanistan. Four of the drones were brought down near the Torkham border and four in mountainous areas near Kohat, security sources said.

“Pakistan will defend its sovereignty, territorial integrity and the lives of its citizens with full resolve and will take all necessary measures to protect them,” Tarar said. “Any further provocative act by Afghan Taliban will be responded with firm and resolute response.”

Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said Pakistani airstrikes on Kandahar, Paktia and Khost provinces had killed four civilians, vowing an “appropriate response”. The claim has not been independently verified.

Casualty figures on both sides remain claims and have not been independently confirmed.
