Pakistan summons India's envoy to protest 'unprovoked' BSF killing of two civilians in Kasur
Pakistan summoned India's chargé d'affaires on Saturday to lodge a 'strong protest' over the killing of two Pakistani civilians by Indian BSF personnel in the Bedian sector on Friday, demanding an immediate transparent investigation and rejecting any attempt to label the dead as 'infiltrators'.
Pakistan summoned India’s chargé d’affaires to the Foreign Office on Saturday to lodge a “strong protest” over the killing of two Pakistani civilians by Indian Border Security Force (BSF) personnel in the Bedian sector along the international border in Kasur on Friday.
In its statement, the Foreign Office said BSF personnel had “resorted to unprovoked and lethal force against unarmed civilians”, calling the use of force “wholly unjustified and grossly disproportionate” and “resulting in the tragic loss of two precious lives”. Islamabad categorically rejected any attempt to characterise the deceased as “infiltrators”.
Pakistan demanded India “conduct an immediate, transparent and credible investigation”, take appropriate disciplinary and legal action against those responsible, and formally communicate the findings and action taken to the Pakistani government. It also urged New Delhi to “respect fundamental human rights and international law, strictly observe relevant bilateral arrangements and established border procedures, exercise maximum restraint in such situations, and take effective measures to prevent similar incidents in the future”.
The deceased were identified as Azmat Rasool and Mohsin Jutt, residents of Jattan Wali Haveli in Ladhar village; a third civilian was injured and taken for medical treatment. According to Pakistani security sources cited by Dawn and Geo, the three unarmed men had moved “a few steps ahead of a border pillar” and were fired on without warning, without attempting to cross the border fence.
The summoning escalates a dispute the Flip News wire covered on Friday, when the two sides gave directly contradictory accounts of the shooting: India said BSF troops thwarted an infiltration bid after repeated warnings were ignored, while Pakistan insisted the victims were civilians. Dawn also noted the protest comes a day after the military’s public relations chief, Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, presented a retired Pakistani commando whom Pakistan says India falsely claimed to have killed in a staged encounter.
