The PSOE’s Federal Committee has unanimously proclaimed Pedro Sánchez as the party’s candidate for the Presidency of the Government in the general election on 29 November. The committee, the party’s highest body between congresses, met this Saturday at the Tomás y Valiente Art Centre in Fuenlabrada, outside Madrid, Demócrata reported.

“On November 29, there is only one goal: victory. We are going out to win, and to govern,” the party said from its Ferraz headquarters.

The committee also approved the PSOE’s lists for Congress and the Senate. Women head 52 per cent of the party’s Congress candidacies — a first — and in total the PSOE is fielding 444 women and 443 men for the Cortes Generales.

The Senate lists follow Friday’s “Senado de Progreso” deal between the PSOE and six left-wing parties, registered in 40 provinces and excluding Catalonia according to reporting by El Nacional, and aimed at stripping the Partido Popular of its absolute Senate majority.

The PP’s Alberto Núñez Feijóo attacked the pact at an event in Pozuelo de Alarcón, calling it a “coalition of the desperate” in coverage aggregated by Particle News.

The day also brought a leadership reshuffle: Rebeca Torró was confirmed as federal spokesperson, replacing Montse Mínguez after her resignation, with Cristina Narbona taking the Secretariat of Studies and Programs and Javier Alfonso Cendón becoming secretary general of the Socialist parliamentary group in Congress, Demócrata reported. Sánchez closed the day with a rally alongside his wife Begoña Gómez.
