Punjab and Sindh send thousands of police to Islamabad ahead of PTI's 27 September march
Thousands of police from Punjab and Sindh are deploying to Islamabad as the capital braces for PTI's planned 27 September march demanding Imran Khan's release.
Thousands of police personnel from Punjab and Sindh are being deployed to Islamabad to assist local authorities as the federal government tightens security ahead of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s planned march on the capital on 27 September, Geo News reported, citing police sources.
The march, announced by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, is demanding the release of PTI founder Imran Khan and what the party calls “the supremacy of the Constitution”. Punjab has already banned gatherings of five or more people.
According to police sources cited by Geo News, around 1,950 personnel from Sindh were expected to reach the capital on Tuesday night, while Punjab will contribute 19,000 police personnel and officers, with that contingent expected to arrive within two days. The federal government had asked Punjab for 23,000 personnel, the sources said, and arrangements for the accommodation of personnel from Sindh, Punjab and the Frontier Corps have been completed.
Separately, the Interior Ministry said that 1,025 Sindh police personnel — almost 900 trainees and 125 training staff from the Police Training College in Shahdadpur, led by Principal Ali Sher Jakhrani — have already reached Islamabad, equipped with anti-riot equipment to help maintain law and order in the federal capital.
The Islamabad High Court has directed that public roads and facilities must not be obstructed by the proposed march, and on Monday directed provincial governments to ensure no governmental resources or officials are used in any march or rally heading toward Islamabad, Arab News reported.
