Lahore High Court orders release of 19 PTI workers detained in Sahiwal
Justice Waheed Khan of the Lahore High Court's Multan Bench has ruled the MPO detention of 19 PTI workers unlawful; they walked free from Sahiwal Central Prison on Sunday.
Nineteen political workers, office-bearers and activists of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) detained under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) Ordinance have been freed after the Lahore High Court ruled their detention unlawful, Dawn reported on Monday.
Justice Waheed Khan of the Multan Bench ordered the release, and the 19 men walked out of Central Prison Sahiwal on Sunday afternoon, Dawn learnt from sources. They had reportedly been arrested on the deputy commissioner’s order on 13 September and held in the central jail; their detention was challenged before the Multan Bench, which declared it unlawful.
Those freed included Agha Qamar Abbas, Shoaib Khan Baloch, Tanveer Hussain, Muhammad Azhar, Javed Iqbal and Mansoor Iftikhar Hashmi, the paper reported.
In a separate development the same day, the Crime Control Department (CCD) arrested two former PTI office-bearers of Vehari district from Adda Ghaziabad on Sunday. The men were identified as Muhammad Nadeem Sargana and Shaban Chauhan. The CCD claimed to have recovered a 30-bore illegal pistol from Chauhan’s possession and six bullets from Sargana’s pocket, and registered a case at the CCD Police Station Sahiwal on the complaint of Inspector Muhammad Sajjad.
