Punjab forms high-powered committee to review Hina Javed murder probe

The Punjab government has formed a three-member committee on Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif's directives to review the investigation into the Hina Javed murder case in Rawalpindi, after forensic and final postmortem reports showed marks of torture.

The Punjab government has formed a three-member high-powered committee to review the investigation into the murder of Hina Javed in Rawalpindi, acting on the directives of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, Dawn reported.

The committee is headed by Additional Inspector General of the Crime Control Department (CCD) Sohail Zafar Chattha, with DIG Lahore Shoaib Khurram Janbaz and SSP Investigation Rawalpindi Saifullah as members, according to Dawn and Dunya News. The panel is expected to arrive in Rawalpindi this week to visit the crime scene and review the investigation conducted so far; it has also contacted the victim’s family.

The move follows the receipt of forensic and final postmortem reports by Rawalpindi police showing marks of torture and other crucial evidence. Findings of the Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PSFA) reportedly point to the role of the family’s domestic servant in the killing, Dawn reported, citing sources.

Hina Javed, 45, was found dead in the washroom of her apartment on August 21, with a strangulation mark around her neck, an injury below her right lip and her nose bleeding; police found her body partially hanging from a washroom shower, hands tied behind her back and a wire noose around her neck. She had married nine months earlier and was her husband’s second wife — Dunya News and Dialogue Pakistan name him as Faisal Asghar, while Dawn names him as Faisal Imam.

Her husband and domestic worker Zeeshan Arshad have been nominated in the murder case, registered at Civil Lines police station on the complaint of her brother Fahad Javed, and are on judicial remand at Adiala Jail. The family had written to the parliamentary caucus committee and the National Commission for Human Rights expressing reservations about the Rawalpindi police investigation.
