Romania's parliament rejects pro-EU PM-designate Muresan, deepening crisis
Siegfried Muresan won 182 votes against the 233 needed, the second rejected candidate since May's coalition collapse; President Nicusor Dan will name a new candidate on Monday as snap-election pressure grows.
Romania’s parliament on Wednesday rejected liberal MEP Siegfried Mureșan as prime minister, deepening a political crisis Reuters says is threatening the country’s investment-grade rating. He won 182 votes against the 233 required, with 15 against. The 45-year-old EPP vice-president and EU-budget negotiator, — never a senior executive office-holder in Romania —, was Dan’s third designate. He promised a pro-EU cabinet with “an ambitious reform agenda” backed by his PNL, USR and UDMR, saying the choice was between “a Romania that moves forward and one that stands still”. The centre-left PSD, parliament’s largest party with 129 seats, refused to back him demanding the premiership; the far-right AUR pledged to vote against all candidates and polls at up to 40%. The crisis began in May when the PSD quit the coalition over austerity and joined the far right to oust PM Bolojan. A previous nominee, Adrian Veștea, failed on 22 June by 189 to 23; Eugen Tomac withdrew before a vote. Article 89 conditions for dissolution are now met — two rejected confidence votes and over 60 days — but the president “may” dissolve parliament — he is not obliged to; Dan says early elections would prolong instability and names a new candidate on Monday.
