Rubio to meet Lavrov in New York on Wednesday morning, State Department says

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will meet Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in New York City on Wednesday morning, the State Department said late on Tuesday, Reuters reported.

The announcement came hours after US President Donald Trump addressed the General Assembly on Tuesday. The Rubio–Lavrov meeting will take place on the sidelines of the high-level week of the United Nations General Assembly, where world leaders have gathered in New York. Russia’s Foreign Ministry confirmed the plan: Kirill Logvinov, director of the ministry’s Department of International Organizations, told the state news agency TASS that “as far as I know, the meeting between Sergey Lavrov and Marco Rubio is scheduled for September 23”, NEWS.am reported.

The talks come as the United States continues its efforts to help settle the war between Russia and Ukraine, AzerNEWS reported, and follow a Tuesday meeting in New York between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Neither side has disclosed an agenda for the Rubio–Lavrov talks.
