Rubio ordered Iranian UN delegation to leave New York after talks stalled, Iran denies
Axios reported, citing US officials, that Marco Rubio ordered Iran's UN General Assembly delegation to leave New York "immediately" on Monday after talks stalled; Iran's UN mission denied the account, saying the departure was pre-planned.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio ordered Iran’s delegation to the UN General Assembly, including Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, to leave New York “immediately” on Monday after negotiations reached an impasse, Axios reported, citing US officials. According to the report, the US mission to the UN informed Iran’s UN mission on Monday evening that the delegation had to depart at once. A US official said the Iranians had “overstayed their welcome”, adding: “The UN General Assembly was over, so it was time for them to go.” Two US officials confirmed the order to the Associated Press. The delegation boarded a flight from New York to Doha at 1.20am local time on Tuesday, with Araghchi travelling on towards Tehran. A second source noted Araghchi had already been scheduled to fly back to Tehran on Monday night. (Al Arabiya English)
Iran’s mission to the UN disputed the account, saying the departure was pre-planned under a schedule communicated to the US State Department on 17 September. “Having achieved nothing, the State Department resorted to promoting baseless reports,” the mission said. White House hopes of progress faded by late Monday afternoon as indirect talks reached a stalemate; Qatari mediators are continuing compromise talks with both sides. The US and Israel have been at war with Iran since 28 February, and the sides signed a June memorandum on restoring Strait of Hormuz navigation and addressing Iran’s nuclear programme.
