Russia claims strikes on Starlink-linked data centre in Kyiv; 100,000 homes hit by outages

Russia's Defence Ministry says its forces struck a Kyiv data centre it alleges supported Starlink systems used by Ukraine's armed forces, as Ukraine reports around 100,000 homes cut off from the internet after days of strikes on telecom infrastructure.

Russia’s Defence Ministry said on Saturday that its forces had struck a data centre in Kyiv that it alleged supported Starlink systems used by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, according to LaPresse, citing Tass.

The ministry said the overnight strikes hit the “Kosmonova data processing centre” in Kyiv, which it claimed provided mobile internet services and support for Starlink satellite communications used by Ukraine’s military. Moscow also said its forces struck a dry cargo vessel in the Black Sea, a port pier in Vylkove, a Nova Poshta logistics centre, and a road bridge in Mayaky, all in the Odesa region, Caliber.Az reported.

The claims have not been independently verified. Ukraine has, however, reported a sharp escalation in Russian attacks on its data centres and telecoms facilities. Around 100,000 homes in Kyiv and the surrounding areas suffered temporary internet outages after strikes on Wednesday and Thursday, Ukraine’s digital transformation ministry said.

Ukrainian foreign minister Andrii Sybiha said on X that “Russia has targeted major Ukrainian data centers, seeking to disrupt the flow of information”. A Friday drone strike on the offices of Datagroup, one of Ukraine’s largest telecoms companies, killed four civilians, EA WorldView reported. Polish authorities are also probing a fire at a Starlink facility serving Ukraine that officials described as a deliberate act of sabotage.
