Russia launches largest attack on Ukraine's energy grid since spring
Russian missiles and drones killed at least four people in and around Kyiv overnight in the largest strike on Ukraine's energy infrastructure since spring, cutting power across the capital, Ukrainian officials said.
KYIV — Russia launched its largest attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure since spring in overnight strikes on Kyiv and the surrounding region, killing at least four people and cutting power across the capital, Ukrainian officials said on Wednesday.
Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko said a driver at utility firm KyivTeploEnergo was killed when a warehouse was hit, while two others died elsewhere in the capital; emergency services said a child was found dead under rubble in the wider Kyiv region. President Volodymyr Zelensky put the toll at five killed, including one child, and 14 injured (AFP, NV).
Ukraine’s air force said Moscow deployed anti-ship and ballistic missiles alongside 188 drones, with five missiles and 155 drones intercepted — the second consecutive night of ballistic missile strikes on the capital. Energy provider DTEK confirmed the grid was damaged and said engineers had restored electricity to 8,000 households (AFP).
Prime minister Serhiy Koretskyi said Russia had shifted to large-scale attacks on the energy system, with 11 regions targeted since Tuesday evening — a combined strike on this scale, the first since the end of the heating season.
Russia acknowledged a “massive missile and drone strike”, claiming it had hit a data centre in the capital, power plants in the Kyiv region, an industrial complex in Odesa and port infrastructure in Izmail. Daily Sabah reported a drone crossed into Moldovan airspace and exploded near Hirbovet, while Romania and Poland scrambled military jets and flights at Lublin and Rzeszow were temporarily suspended (Daily Sabah).
