Russia hits Ukraine's largest mobile provider and data centres; 8 killed in overnight strikes

Russia struck the Kyiv headquarters of Kyivstar, Ukraine's largest mobile provider, and hit data centres belonging to Vodafone Ukraine, while overnight strikes across the country killed at least eight people.

Russia struck the headquarters of Kyivstar, Ukraine’s largest mobile service provider, on Sunday, the company told local media, as Moscow continued a bombardment of Ukrainian data centres and communications infrastructure, Reuters reported.

Kyivstar told the Interfax Ukraine news agency that its head office in Kyiv had been hit but that there were no casualties. Russia’s defence ministry also said on Sunday it had hit a data centre belonging to Vodafone Ukraine, the country’s second-largest mobile network provider. Vodafone Ukraine did not respond to a request for comment.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia struck a data centre in Kyiv twice on Sunday morning, wounding two children and an adult. Moscow has also hit data centres belonging to Ukrainian internet providers over the past week, causing service outages to about 100,000 households in Kyiv and the surrounding region, according to Ukraine’s digital ministry.

Separately, Russian strikes across Ukraine killed eight people, Ukrainian authorities said on Sunday, AFP reported via The Express Tribune. Interior Minister Ivan Vyhivskyi said strikes hit a children’s centre in the northern city of Sumy, killing three people including a 16-year-old girl. Zelenskyy said three people were killed in night-time strikes on the Zaporizhzhia region and a Russian drone strike killed one man in Kyiv, while a strike in the Odesa region killed one more person.

Zelenskyy said that over the past week Russia had launched more than 2,200 attack drones, around 1,650 aerial bombs and 38 missiles at Ukraine. The strikes came a day after Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told the United Nations that Moscow intended to continue its military campaign “to the end”.
