Loud explosions rock Yemen's capital Sanaa as government forces announce strikes on Houthi targets

Loud explosions shook Yemen's capital Sanaa on Saturday, with AFP correspondents hearing at least five blasts and the internationally recognised government's forces announcing strikes on what they called legitimate military targets in the Houthi-held city.

Loud explosions were heard in Yemen’s capital Sanaa on Saturday, as the Houthis reported airstrikes in the area by Saudi-backed government forces.

AFP correspondents in the city heard at least five blasts in different areas, according to Dawn’s live coverage, with one correspondent seeing two warplanes firing missiles on the city.

Al-Masirah TV, a Houthi-affiliated media outlet, reported “Saudi aggression” against the capital, without providing details on the targets or casualties.

Yemen’s internationally recognised government later confirmed an operation: the Yemeni Armed Forces said their forces had carried out attacks on “legitimate, vital military targets” in Sana’a, according to Arab News. Government-affiliated media reported air strikes on Houthi positions in the Al-Nahdain and Jabal Attan areas, and said reinforcements had arrived in Taiz Governorate amid escalating attacks by Houthi fighters.

The strikes come amid what Anadolu described as the widest military escalation in three weeks between government forces and the Houthis, with clashes concentrated in the southwestern provinces of Taiz and Lahej — the most intense since September 10, when the Houthis took control of the strategic city of Mokha. The number of people displaced since military operations intensified in July is approaching 198,000, according to government data.

It is the same day a large plume of smoke and flames was seen near an Aramco facility in Riyadh, a Reuters witness said, amid the escalating hostilities between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis.
