Sikkim landslide: 32 homes damaged or destroyed in Rimbi village as heavy rain lashes Himalayan state

A major landslide has struck Rimbi village in West Sikkim, damaging or destroying more than 32 houses after days of relentless heavy rain, officials said.

The landslide hit on Thursday night (24 September), sending mud, rocks and debris from the upper slopes into inhabited areas of the village in the Yuksom-Tashiding constituency of Gyalshing district. Four government quarters of the Power Department were also damaged. No casualties have been reported.

Rimbi Panchayat President Mangal Rai told ANI that 32 households had been left without homes or land: “We have relocated everyone to relief camps.” He said the district administration and the Sikkim government had jointly arranged shelter for the affected families, most of whom were moved to the Rimbi Panchayat Bhawan while others stayed with relatives. Rai said landslides had been recurring in the Rimbi and Singnitham wards since August and confirmed that livestock had also been displaced.

The Yuksom-Rimbi area recorded 224.6mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, the highest anywhere in Sikkim, according to the Deccan Chronicle. Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has assured full government support, and the Gangtok District Disaster Management Authority has begun a damage assessment amid continued rainfall.
