Five killed, ten injured in boiler blast at Andhra pharma unit

A boiler explosion at the TIL Healthcare pharmaceutical unit in Sri City's special economic zone killed five workers and left ten seriously injured on Saturday morning.

Five workers were killed and ten others seriously injured after a boiler exploded at a private pharmaceutical company in Andhra Pradesh’s Tirupati district on Saturday morning, officials said.

The blast tore through the TIL Healthcare manufacturing unit in the Sri City special economic zone in Satyavedu mandal. The explosion triggered a fire inside the facility and caused panic across the industrial area, with rescue and emergency teams rushing to the spot. The injured were evacuated and shifted to hospitals, some to Chennai for critical care.

Three of the dead were identified as Gourab Roy (35), Chinna Mastan (36) and Ramesh (40), while Vasu (36) died while undergoing treatment in Chennai, according to The News Minute and Deccan Chronicle. Tirupati superintendent of police L Subbarayudu confirmed the toll of five after initial reports put it at four.

The cause of the explosion is under investigation, including the possibility of a technical fault in the boiler, police said. Officials are still establishing how many workers were in the unit at the time.

Andhra Pradesh IT and HRD minister Nara Lokesh expressed deep shock, directed officials to ensure the best possible treatment for the injured and assured government support for the bereaved families. Tirupati MP Maddila Gurumoorthi conveyed condolences and called for a thorough investigation. State home minister Vangalapudi Anitha was expected to visit the site.

Since Friday was a Gandhi Jayanti holiday, fewer workers were present than usual, South First reported — a circumstance that likely limited casualties.
