Strike on UN food aid trucks in Sudan kills driver, WFP says

The World Food Programme says a strike on two of its food aid trucks in South Kordofan killed one driver on Saturday, calling for a prompt investigation. The agency did not say who was behind the attack.

One driver was killed when two United Nations food aid trucks came under attack in Sudan’s South Kordofan state on Saturday, the World Food Programme (WFP) said on Sunday. The agency did not say who was behind the strike.

The trucks were travelling between the army-controlled cities of Dilling and Kadugli when they were hit, despite being “clearly marked as humanitarian vehicles”, the WFP said. The agency said it was assessing the damage and called for a prompt investigation into the incident.

The WFP added that just a day earlier, another of its trucks had struck an explosive device in Dilling after delivering food assistance.

Sudan’s state news agency SUNA separately reported that the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) had targeted WFP food trucks in Dilling with drones over the past two days, leaving WFP personnel seriously injured. The WFP itself named no perpetrator.

The attack comes as fighting intensifies in Kordofan, where Sudan’s army and the RSF are battling for territory more than three years into a war that aid workers estimate has killed over 200,000 people and displaced more than 11 million — the world’s largest hunger and displacement crises. Famine was confirmed last year in Kadugli.
