STOCKHOLM: A man shot by Swedish police outside the Royal Palace in central Stockholm on Tuesday evening was arrested and informed of the charges against him on Wednesday morning, police said.

The alarm was raised at Lejonbacken at about 6.30pm on Tuesday, October 6, after reports of a disruptive individual carrying a weapon. Responding officers opened fire and the man was hit.

“The man was hit and taken to hospital,” Stockholm police spokeswoman Susanna Rinaldo told AFP. She said his injuries were considered serious but not life-threatening, and declined to specify the type of weapon involved.

In a statement to Swedish news agency TT, the Royal Court said the man had acted threateningly and was carrying a knife, adding that no member of the royal family was at the palace at the time. Swedish newspaper Expressen reported that the man approached palace guards armed with a knife and asked to be shot.

Police said there was no danger to the public. A preliminary investigation has been opened into aggravated threats against a public official and a serious violation of the Knife Act. Because officers fired their service weapons, the incident will be reviewed by the Special Investigations Unit, which Rinaldo said was standard practice.

The man was not questioned overnight; longer questioning will take place at a later date, police said.
