Gas pipeline explosion at Tishreen plant knocks three Syrian power stations offline
An explosion on a gas line at the Tishreen Thermal Power Plant east of Damascus has forced three major power stations out of service, Syria's Electricity Company says.
A gas pipeline explosion at the Tishreen Thermal Power Plant in the Damascus countryside has forced three major Syrian power stations out of service, the Syrian Electricity Company announced on Wednesday.
The Deir Ali, Nasiriyah and Tishreen plants all went offline after an explosion on a gas line at Tishreen disrupted the gas supplies required to operate them, the company said in a statement carried by the official SANA news agency. The blast occurred in the Harran Al-Awamid area of the eastern Damascus countryside, near Damascus International Airport, Arab News reported.
The company said the fire caused by the explosion was still burning when it issued its statement, while specialised emergency teams dealt with the incident. No estimate was given for when the plants might resume operations; the company warned the shutdown would temporarily reduce generation capacity and increase scheduled power cuts, promising further updates.
Civil Defense teams later brought the fire under control and cooling operations began, Arab News reported. The cause of the explosion was not immediately known.
The blast comes a day after SANA reported a separate sabotage explosion on an eastern gas pipeline between the Al-Shoula area and Deir Ezzor, which halted gas flow from the Al-Jabsah plant to power stations. Energy Minister Mohammad al-Bashir has said Syria now produces 8.5 million cubic metres of gas a day against demand of 22 to 25 million, down from 30 million before the 2011–2024 civil war, according to Al Arabiya.
