Ten killed, 11 wounded in shooting at entertainment venue outside Cape Town

Gunmen killed ten people and wounded 11 others in an early-morning attack on an entertainment venue in Lwandle, outside Cape Town, hours after 17 people were shot dead at a tavern west of Johannesburg.

Ten people have been killed and 11 others wounded after gunmen opened fire at an entertainment venue in Lwandle, a township outside Cape Town, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Agence France-Presse reports that the gunmen entered the venue, which also sells braaied meat (shisanyama), at 01:46 and “shot at patrons”. Five of the victims died at the scene, police said.

NovaNews, citing Western Cape provincial police, reports that five more victims later succumbed to their injuries after being taken to medical facilities, while 11 others are receiving treatment. Western Cape provincial commissioner, lieutenant-general Sizakhele Dyantyi, has established a multidisciplinary team led by serious violent crime detectives to investigate, and Lwandle police have opened murder and attempted murder cases. No arrests have been made.

Police said the identities of the deceased will be released once their next of kin have been informed, and urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stop on 0860 010 111 or use the MySAPS App.

The attack came hours after eight gunmen killed 17 people and wounded 15 at a tavern in Wedela, west of Johannesburg, on Saturday evening — the country’s second mass shooting within a day. South African police said on Sunday that the suspects in the Wedela attack, who were reportedly armed with AK-47 rifles and pistols, torched two vehicles before fleeing; the motive is unknown and no arrests have been made in either case.

South Africa, home to around 62 million people, has one of the world’s highest murder rates, with roughly 60 people killed every day. In March, soldiers were moved into violence hotspots in Johannesburg to support police efforts, after President Cyril Ramaphosa described crime as one of the biggest threats facing the country.
