China reports no further casualties or secondary disasters from Tibet earthquake

China has reported no secondary geological disasters and no further casualties from Friday's magnitude-7 earthquake in Tibet, citing inspections of the area around the epicentre.

China said on Monday there had been no secondary geological disasters and no further casualties from Friday’s magnitude-7 earthquake in Tibet, Reuters reported, citing a statement from the country’s Ministry of Natural Resources.

The ministry said the impact of the earthquake on glacier lakes and glaciers in the affected area was “generally minimal”, according to Reuters. Authorities have completed inspections of secondary geological disasters within 50 kilometres (31 miles) of the epicentre.

Inspectors checked 157 geological disaster hazard points, including 122 existing hazards and 35 new hazard points, the ministry said. Experts also analysed 80 glacial lakes and 145 glaciers within a 50-kilometre radius of the earthquake, Reuters reported.

Since the earthquake, there have been 2,054 aftershocks, including two of at least magnitude 5.0, according to the ministry’s account reported by Reuters.

The earthquake struck Nagqu, a high-altitude city in northern Tibet, on Friday, killing 16 people, Reuters said. It was the strongest earthquake to hit China since January 2024, and it struck a sparsely populated region, Reuters reported.
