Shooting near Towson University puts Maryland campus under shelter-in-place

Towson University in Maryland issued a campus-wide shelter-in-place alert on Sunday evening after a shooting was reported just off campus, telling students and staff to stay indoors, close and lock windows and doors, and await further instructions.

The university’s public safety department sent the alert at about 7.20pm local time, warning: “This is not a drill.” It followed reports of a shooting at 8013 York Road, in the 8000 block of York Road near the campus, according to WBAL-TV 11 reporting cited by the Hindustan Times. NottinghamMD reported the call came in at about 7.15pm at the Cardiff Hall East Apartments.

Baltimore County Police responded to the scene. Officers confirmed one man had been taken to a local hospital, with his condition and age unknown. No information about a suspect has been released to the public, and the cause of the shooting remains unknown.

Authorities asked the public to avoid the area so officers could resolve the incident. University officials told the campus community to report anything unusual to police and await further direction from local authorities.
