Trump meets Venezuela's Rodríguez at UNGA in first talks since Maduro's capture

US President Donald Trump met Venezuela's interim president Delcy Rodríguez late Tuesday on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, their first meeting since US forces captured Nicolás Maduro in a January raid.

US President Donald Trump met Venezuela’s interim president Delcy Rodríguez late on Tuesday on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, their first meeting since American forces captured then-president Nicolás Maduro in a January raid, Reuters reported.

The pull-aside at a reception Trump hosted came during her first US trip since taking office; she addresses the General Assembly on Wednesday afternoon.

Rodríguez called it a “historic step” towards strengthening ties with the US in energy, mining and security. “Venezuela and the United States share a historic relationship that, in this new phase, we are called upon to steer through dialogue,” she said on Telegram, Reuters reported.

Trump was joined by Marco Rubio, Scott Bessent, Susie Wiles and Stephen Miller, a White House official said. Two people close to the Venezuelan delegation told Reuters it — including the economy vice-president, the oil minister and PDVSA officials — was focused on making the country look “investable”.

Critics say Washington has sidelined the opposition led by María Corina Machado in favour of oil and investment deals, the report said. Machado, exiled since late last year, made three unsuccessful attempts to return to Venezuela by sea and air in recent hours, her team and media said. More than 50 protesters gathered outside the UN calling for free elections.

In his UNGA speech, Trump called Maduro an “outlaw dictator” and last month’s Caracas oil deal “perhaps the biggest deal ever made”, Reuters reported, saying he wants $100 billion invested in Venezuela’s oil industry.
