Trump to meet Zelenskyy in New York on Tuesday as US pushes Russia–Ukraine de-escalation

US President Donald Trump will meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in New York on Tuesday, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, after the pair agreed the meeting in a phone call on Monday.

US President Donald Trump will meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in New York on Tuesday, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, amid a push for Russia–Ukraine de-escalation.

The pair agreed the meeting in a Monday phone call, ANI reported. Zelenskyy wrote on X: “I just spoke with President Trump. An important conversation, and we got through a lot. We agreed to meet in New York, and this meeting could change a lot. There is diplomatic momentum.”

According to Axios, Trump repeatedly urged Zelenskyy during the call to halt Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries, with the attacks linked to fuel-supply disruption and higher diesel prices. A source familiar with the conversation told Axios that “the word diesel came up many times during the call”. The Telegraph reported that Trump is expected to raise the refinery strikes in New York.

Zelenskyy has previously said Ukraine could halt strikes on Russian energy facilities if Russia guarantees against attacks on Ukrainian critical infrastructure. Ukrainian chief negotiator Rustem Umerov, who also heads Ukraine’s Foreign Intelligence Service, worked with White House envoys to arrange the talks, Axios reported.

Zelenskyy thanked Trump for sending envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Kyiv and for signing the Lindsey Graham bill into law. “The peace track is our number one priority,” he said, with de-escalation, energy, food and protecting human life on the agenda. The talks take place during the 81st UN General Assembly, where the war is among the major issues on the agenda.
