Eight wounded in shooting outside Turkish high school; suspect detained

A gunman opened fire outside a high school in western Türkiye on Tuesday morning, wounding eight people before being detained by police, local officials said.

The shooting happened at around 07:59 local time (04:59 GMT) near the İnci Üzmez Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in Turgutlu, in Manisa province west of Izmir, according to a statement from the Manisa Governor’s Office. Police and medical teams were dispatched to the scene, and the injured were taken to hospital. The suspect was detained by security forces shortly afterwards; officials gave no immediate details about the individual or the motive, and said an investigation had been opened.

Several Turkish media outlets, including the IHA news agency and NTV, said students were among the injured, the Korea Times reported, citing AFP-Yonhap.

The attack is the third school-related shooting in Türkiye in six months. In April, a 14-year-old opened fire at a school in the southern province of Kahramanmaras, killing a teacher and nine students aged 10 and 11; the attacker died at the scene. A day earlier, a teenager opened fire at his former high school in Sanliurfa province, wounding 16 people before taking his own life when confronted by police.
