Monsoon floods and landslides kill 56 in Uttar Pradesh, 12 in Nepal over three days

At least 68 people have been killed in northern India and Nepal in the past 72 hours after heavy monsoon rain triggered floods and landslides across the region, authorities said on Sunday.

In India’s most populous state of Uttar Pradesh, 56 people died and more than 1,000 houses were damaged over the past three days, the state Relief Commissioner’s office said in a statement. The deaths came during a spell of “exceptionally heavy rain” after a “depression over the Bay of Bengal moved inland and intensified rainfall across the region”.

The state recorded 66.5 millimetres of rain between Friday and Sunday, compared with a season average of 7.6 millimetres. According to the situation report, 56 of Uttar Pradesh’s 75 districts recorded “large excess” rainfall — an excess of about 775 per cent.

Sitapur recorded the highest number of deaths at seven; Lakhimpur Kheri, Bahraich and Balrampur reported five fatalities each, while Ayodhya and Gorakhpur recorded four deaths each. In all, 46 people were injured, 1,021 houses were damaged — 272 of them in Hardoi — and 107 animals died, the Relief Commissioner’s office said. Relief Commissioner Hrishikesh Bhaskar Yashod said rescue, relief and damage-assessment operations were underway and crop-loss assessment was still in progress.

Neighbouring Nepal was hit by fresh flooding and landslides that killed 12 people since Thursday, with seven more missing. “Since Thursday, 12 people have died in rain-related disasters such as floods and landslides,” Shanti Mahat, spokesperson for Nepal’s disaster authority, said. The country was already reeling from last month’s floods, triggered by a glacial collapse on the China–Nepal border, which killed more than 1,400 people and left thousands missing.

In India’s eastern state of Odisha, officials evacuated more than 70,000 people from low-lying areas after rivers swelled following heavy downpours, NDTV reported.
