Victoria has been shaken by a magnitude 4.8 earthquake in the early hours of Saturday morning, with tremors felt across Melbourne and much of the state.

Geoscience Australia recorded the preliminary magnitude 4.8 quake near Leongatha, about 135 kilometres south-east of Melbourne, at 2:01 am AEST on Saturday 3 October 2026. Two aftershocks followed: a magnitude 3.1 tremor at 2:56 am and a magnitude 2.5 at 12:25 pm the same day.

More than 10,000 felt reports had been lodged by 2:30 am, rising to over 16,000 by about 3 am, according to initial media reports of the event.

The quake, at a shallow depth of about 10 kilometres, produced no immediate reports of injuries or property damage. Victoria’s State Emergency Service said there was no immediate threat and no action was required. The Bureau of Meteorology advised there was no tsunami threat.

It was the strongest earthquake in Victoria since the magnitude 5.0 quake off the Great Ocean Road in 2023, and follows a period of heightened seismic activity since the magnitude 5.9 tremor near Mansfield in September 2021.
