Truck ploughs through youth soccer game in Wichita, killing child and adult

A pickup truck drove onto the field at a Wichita sports complex during a youth soccer game, killing a child and an adult; the driver is in custody.

A black pickup truck ploughed through a youth soccer game at a sports complex in Wichita, Kansas, on Saturday afternoon, killing a child and an adult and injuring several others, police said.

The vehicle drove onto the field at the Stryker Sports Complex at around 3.25pm local time, when emergency dispatchers began receiving multiple calls reporting it had driven through a soccer game, Wichita Police Captain Aaron Moses told a news conference, according to CNN. Witnesses told CNN affiliate KWCH that a black pickup truck jumped the curb, drove onto the field and struck several people before stopping some 100 to 200 yards away.

Multiple other people were injured and taken to hospital, USA Today reported. The names and ages of those killed have not been released as officials work to notify their families.

The driver is in custody, and police said there was no ongoing threat to the public. Two juveniles were inside the vehicle, according to CNN. The Wichita Police Department described the incident on social media as a mass casualty incident, USA Today reported.

Police have not said how the vehicle got onto the field or how fast it was travelling, and have not commented on any motive. A motive and the vehicle’s speed remain unconfirmed.

All events at the Stryker Sports Complex have been cancelled until further notice, and authorities have asked the public to share any video footage from the complex to assist the investigation.
