Xi Jinping arrives in US today for three-day summit with Trump

China’s President Xi Jinping arrives in the United States on Wednesday for a three-day state visit, at the invitation of US President Donald Trump.

Xi will be in the US from 23 to 25 September, China’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Monday. During the visit, he “will hold in-depth exchanges of views with President Trump on major issues concerning China-US relations, as well as world peace and development,” ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said at a regular press conference shortly after the announcement.

Trump will personally welcome Xi on the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday — a rare airport reception — before their meetings the following day, a US official confirmed. Trump was welcomed by China’s vice president when he landed in Beijing for his state visit in May.

“I’ll be discussing almost everything with him,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday.

Guo called the reciprocal visits by the two heads of state within a six-month period “of historic, milestone significance,” adding that Beijing was willing to work with Washington to “strengthen dialogue and cooperation, properly manage differences, continuously enhance the well-being of the peoples of both countries, and promote world peace, stability and prosperity.”

The summit takes place against a tense backdrop. The trade war between the world’s two biggest economies is a key concern, and the threat of military confrontation over Taiwan looms large; both sides have maintained a tariff truce for nearly a year but have yet to secure a lasting agreement. Trump last week signed the Lindsey Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, which authorises tariffs of up to 100 per cent on countries buying Russian oil and gas — including China.

Ahead of the visit, Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng held talks with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in New York on Sunday. The two sides held “candid, in-depth and constructive” talks on economic and trade issues, including artificial intelligence, with Bessent saying the US had proposed a new notification mechanism for AI incidents that could affect national security.
